Project Hail Mary ~ Andy Weir

 Project Hail Mary
~Andy Weir

A Lone Astronaut.
An Impossible Mission.
An Ally he never Imagined.

“I penetrated the outer cell membrane with a nanosyringe."
"You poked it with a stick?"
"No!" I said. "Well. Yes. But it was a scientific poke with a very scientific stick.”
~ Ryland Grace to Stratt

“Imagine waking up in a strange spaceship, strapped to a hospital bed, with no memory of who you are, only to discover you might be humanity’s last hope for survival.” This is how Andy Weir’s 2021 science fiction masterpiece, Project Hail Mary, begins with high stakes mystery set in the cold silence of space. It is an another amazing book by the author of the novel The Martian which has been adapted into an Oscar-nominated film by the same name, directed by Ridley Scott.

It follows the story of Ryland Grace our main protagonist, who is an unassuming but passionate junior high school science teacher, formerly a brilliant molecular biologist. He wakes up alone on a spacecraft, afraid and confused out of his mind with a very annoying robot continuously asking the question "What's two plus two". As fragments of his past return, Grace discovers that he is humanity’s last hope in a desperate mission to stop a microscopic organism, Astrophage, from destroying the Sun. Using an Astrophage-powered spacecraft, he travels nearly 12 light-years in search of a solution to save Earth's dying Sun. He is the textbook definition of a reluctant hero, armed with nothing but determination, wit, and a deep, profound love for science. The sarcastic banter he shares with his space companion, Rocky never fails to crack me up. Now you may be wondering who is Rocky?

Rocky, the alien engineer from the 40 Eridani system, is one of the most curious and loyal character in the book, who will most likely make you fall in love with the character. Belonging to a species adapted to extreme heat and pressure, Rocky communicates through a series of musical tones and clicks, requiring creative solutions for cross-species dialogue. He quickly formed a bond with Grace, working together to save their species from extinction. Despite vast biological and cultural differences, the two form a close partnership, pooling their scientific knowledge to develop a cure. Rocky’s technical brilliance, unwavering loyalty, and straightforward honesty make him not only an invaluable ally but also a true friend. Fun fact: The average lifespan of Eridians is six hundred eighty-nine years which makes them nearly immortal and instead of blood they have Mercury flowing through their two, yes two, circulatory systems. In short: Eridians are steam powered.

After countless experiments, near-death situations, and setbacks, Grace and Rocky finally discover a strain of Astrophage’s natural predator, Taumoeba, on a planet Adrian orbiting the star, Tau Ceti. Adrian has the perfect conditions for the Taumoeba to naturally prey on Astrophage, making it the key to saving both our Sun and Eridani Star - 40 Eridani. They isolate and breed strains of Taumoeba to survive in the environments of Venus and 40 Eridani, ultimately using the predator as the key to stopping Astrophage on both worlds.

With the cure in hand, Grace sets course for home, expecting to return to Earth as a hero but circumstances had other plans. Rocky's return journey isn't smooth. His ship suffers catastrophic damage, leaving his return to Erid far from certain. The damage stranded him alone in space. Grace after learning about Rocky's predicament decides to turn around and help his friend, which will make his return back to Earth impossible due to fuel crisis. He made this decision knowing that he will never see another human being again, never feel Earth’s sunlight, never return to his former life. He will be stranded alone in the universe forever just to ensure that Rocky's species survive. This is a devastating and bittersweet moment for Grace, who longs to return to Earth. With the crisis averted for both worlds, Grace remains on Rocky’s planet, forever separated from humanity but welcomed as an honoured guest and friend. The last scene shows him teaching the students of the Erid with same passion, enthusiasm and joyfulness he once had for his Earth classrooms.

Project Hail Mary is more than just an interstellar adventure. It teaches us about the power of friendship, selflessness and the wonders of science. It is a beautiful novel and is definitely worth reading.

Thank you.
